Our apprentice scheme

Our apprentices

In the last year, the London School of Mosaic has been able to recruit two apprentices to join its team. These roles were designed to offer work experience to local people who had an interest in the Arts and more specifically Mosaic. The apprentices help to keep the workshop ticking along by sorting tiles, cleaning, repairs, cutting wood and building frames. The Apprentices are involved in all elements of the mosaic projects; from initial ideas to design work, through to creating the mosaic and then installation. They work on all Mosaic projects alongside trained Mosaicists, gaining valuable skills.  Our apprentices also help to run sessions with our community such as our free session for local residents which is now led by Jenny.

2021-22’s apprentices:

Connor

“I came across The London School of Mosaic when my Mum visited with the school that she teaches at. She mentioned it to me and it sounded like an exciting prospect. My duties involve working on commissions, projects, community sessions and observing The studio I am learning a lot about mosaic which is something that I did not have much experience in before. This experience gives me a good base to investigate my own position as a creative.”

Jenny

Jenny is a local resident who became aware of the London school of Mosaic through the joining the free session for people from the local community. She really enjoyed mosaic and started volunteering on Monday evenings at the youth offending session. Jenny built up her mosaic skills through courses at the school and decided that she would like to complete a Diploma in mosaic studies. The high cost of the course meant that this was difficult for Jenny to commit to, so instead she applied to become an apprentice. Starting 5 days per week she helps with all commissions, running workshops with the community, organising the workshop and the different materials, maintaining stock and helps to coordinate the volunteers. After starting as an apprentice Jenny secured a scholarship to complete the Diploma.

In the future Jenny would like to explore making a living from Mosaic practice.
