Diploma in Mosaic Studies

Course content

We are the only organisation in the UK offering a Diploma in Mosaic Studies, it is currently the highest level mosaic training in the UK. The programme is unique as students gain a solid understanding of using traditional techniques, working with hammer and hardie, and specialist bases and substrates. This is a much needed skill for working in the context of mosaic restoration and commissions, where the sector experiences skill shortages. The practical making in the studio is combined with the study of design approaches including andamento, colour theory, and drawing, as well as with mosaic history to enable students to contextualise and analyse their work.

Our one-year diploma covers the following modules:

Upon successful completion of your year of study, you will be awarded a Diploma in Mosaic Studies (Level 7 SQCF/Level 4 RQF). This course is validated by Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Careers

As part of our programme students will have the opportunity to meet renowned mosaic makers who give guest lectures at our school about their work and professional practice. We arrange site visits at the V&A, where students can meet the curator overseeing the mosaic collection. Students are invited to attend ASPROM and BAMM conferences, where they can network and expand their knowledge. At our school there are regular opportunities for paid work on commissions, which our students and graduates take part in.

After completing their diploma, these are some of the pathways our students have taken:

  • teaching of mosaic in schools and colleges

  • working in art therapy with mosaic

  • developing community art projects and public art commissions

  • commercial mosaic restoration and/or commissions

  • setting up an artist studio at our school (we offer a number of artist studios for our graduates) and make work for sale
