The Shard Christmas Lights

This year we have designed The Shard Christmas Lights! Selected from submissions from our community, three designs will be presented by Bridget Kelly, Stephen Young and Lou Dosset

Visualisation of The Shard Snowman by Lou Dosset

“The mosaic inspired designs will be brought to life with animation and movement across the top 20 storeys of The Shard. The new display will begin on the evening of 28th November and light up the sky every night 17:30 - 01:00 until New Year’s Eve. Visible from over 40 miles away, Londoners and visitors to the capital will be able to enjoy a glimpse of the vibrant colours to brighten up their evening.

Reflecting the rich artistic endeavours constantly developing within the heart of London, this year The Shard has partnered with London School of Mosaic (LSoM) on the display. The art school tasked its students and volunteers to use The Shard’s spire as a canvas for three festive mosaic that have been transformed into a dynamic 30-minute light show by lighting designer, Woodroffe Bassett Design.

Visualisation of The Shard Snowman by Lou Dosset

During the show, viewers across London will be able to see:

  • “The Shard Snowman”, by Lou Dosset – A larger than life snowman – an iconic festive symbol – will appear with a striking red scarf and hat to add a pop of colour before melting away.

  • “Festive Candle” by Bridget Kelly– A softly illuminated candle, set against a bright blue backdrop, will radiate festive charm.

  • “Festive Pattern” by Stephen Young – a bold green and gold pattern inspired by a Christmas Brooch created by Pop Art pioneering Scottish artist Eduardo Paolozzi.”

This collaboration builds upon our working relationship with the Shard, who also sponsored a panel on ‘A Thousand Streams’, our public artwork designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman.

These principles don’t just apply to laying of the tesserae but also extend to the planning and designing of mosaics, both Roman-style and contemporary abstract pieces. The talk will touch on the concepts of sdoppiamento and andamento and will demonstrate how these concepts have been used across the centuries.

About Helen Miles

Trained in Greece, Helen Miles is the former editor of Andamento, the journal of the British Association for Modern Mosaics. She has more than 20 years’ experience designing, making and teaching mosaics.

Helen’s first book about mosaics, Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art, will be published by White Owl press in March 2023. She is based in Edinburgh where she runs mosaic workshops as well as leading an annual residential course in Greece.

LSOM Artist Lecture Series: Carrie Reichardt

Carrie Reichardt’s award winning public work reflects her sustained engagement with people, place and politics, with a focus on marginalized groups - and in particular, women and their hidden histories. Reichardt draws on local archival sources to create works that resonate with the communities they are set within, and describes her work as a form of “ceramic tapestry” – weaving local people and their histories together.

Reichardt has been involved in community and public art projects for two decades, designing and consulting on large-scale mosaic murals in various local communities. She has produced a community mosaic in Miravalle, one of the most deprived districts on the fringes of Mexico City as well as projects in Argentina and Chile. In 2018, Reichardt finally completed the transformation of her west London home into a giant mosaic mural – a process that took twenty years and tens of thousands of tiles to complete.

In 2013, Reichardt won the prestigious Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship to research ‘How to advance community mosaics in the UK’.

Reichardt trained at Kingston University and achieved a First Class degree in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan. She was Artist in Residence at Camberwell Art College in 2009, The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, USA 2014 and is currently artist is residence with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Reichardt is frequently called to speak on the use of craft and art as protest and has presented at Museum of Liverpool, Victoria and Albert Museum, ICA, Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

LSoM Artist Lecture Series: Amy Leigh-Bird

Amy Leigh-Bird’s work celebrates material, both natural and manmade and is drawn to the detritus on the shores of rivers and seas. For the last three years she has been exploring the banks of the Thames, studying and collecting bones found on the foreshore. Amy is also interested in the psychology of collecting, why people collect and if collecting is an intrinsic part of our lives. Amy believes that “the attitude of disposability prevalent in today’s world can only be confronted once more value is invested in the materials that we consider as waste. Through art, we can reveal new perspectives by elevating these materials beyond images of neglect”.

Amy-Leigh Bird graduated from the Painting & Printmaking BA Hons at The Glasgow School of Art in 2017 and in 2019 graduated from her MA in Creative Entrepreneurship with a distinction at The University of East Anglia. Whilst studying Amy-Leigh lived and studied in Jerusalem, Israel at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and has taken part in several group and solo exhibitions including her first solo show at The Anise Gallery, Shad Thames, The Other Art Fair London, at NO20 Art Gallery in Highbury & Islington, Avivson Gallery in Highgate and on Bond Street and with renowned artist Nigel Grierson.

Catherine's background is in textiles, she has a degree in embroidery, painting and drawing from Manchester Metropolitan University. However, she feels that the mosaic medium can give an image a depth and solidity that cannot be achieved with any other art form, which is why she chooses to work in this medium. She began studying mosaics in 1992 with Vanessa Benson and undertook an informal apprenticeship with her until 1995, when she embarked on her first mosaic commission. She exhibits regularly in London and throughout the UK and has been commissioned around the world.

LSoM Artist Lecture Series: Matt Small

Matt Small

In this instalment of the Artist Lecture series Matt Small will be talking about his art practise. Primarily a painter, Small also makes metal works which blend the boundary between paintings and mosaics.

London based Small has a strong, compelling style, often choosing discarded objects like car bonnets or old signs instead of canvas for his work. “The theme of my work is young, dispossessed people: individuals who feel undervalued, who don’t have a voice, who get looked over.” Small explains how the urban debris he paints on becomes symbolic of the feeling of being without value: “I thought it’d be interesting to connect the two – that oven door, that shelving unit, that piece of trash to someone – I don’t see it like that, I see that it can be something beautiful and worthwhile. That’s how I see our young people too. Let’s look at their potential, at the hope that’s in all of them

In the LSoM artist lecture series contemporary mosaicists talk about their work at The London School of Mosaic. All invited artists have been specifically picked to contrast each other and offer different perspectives on what contemporary mosaics can be . However, all are successful practising mosaic makers exhibiting and working with institutions such as The Venice Biennale, The De La Warr Pavilion, The Chisenhale Gallery, The Royal Academy, The British School in Rome and more.

These lectures are intended to inspire and challenge in equal measure. The expectation is that through these lectures we will be able to further define what is possible with mosaics in the present day- and through attending these lectures you will be able to define your own position amongst a myriad of practitioners.

The lectures take the form of a simple artist talk, 45 minutes and then a short Q+A session. It will take place in our workshop. The artists will talk about their attitude to art, and then contextualise their mosaic work and explain why they think it is a good medium.

LSoM Artist Lecture Series: Andy Williams

Andy Williams

In this instalment of the lecture series Andy Williams will be talking about his art practise, in which he primarily uses in mosaic to build three dimensional sculptures.

He says:

"I am a sculptor and mosaicist interested in the use of mosaic as a way of building form and interacting with 3-dimensional space. My work often materialises in obsessively constructed monochromatic forms that reference, but ultimately deny, domestic functionality.

Contextualised by the historic destruction of mosaics by iconoclastic movements, the medium presents me with a framework with which to consider contemporary object-making (and breaking) as well as an outlet for sculptural expression and material exploration."

“Torn between optimism and surrender, I am haunted by the idea of mankind’s imminent self-destruction. Yet, I believe in a future for humanity of resourceful innovation through re-thinking, re-purposing and reducing. It is this hope that is made visible through my work, which is composed almost entirely of rubbish and ‘found’ material.”

Sabina Giuntinelli: Mosaic development in Cape Town 2014-2020

Sabina Giuntinelli.jpg

We are excited to host this talk by Sabina Giuntinelli, who will reflect on her work at Spiers Arts Academy in Cape Town, South Africa:

From 2014 to 2020 Sabina dedicated herself to teaching mosaic to young adults in Cape Town, South Africa at Spier Arts Academy. The Academy was started in 2008 by private patrons and its aim was to conjugate career development for emerging African artists with the creation of artisanal and business skills in youths coming from disadvantaged situations.

Spier Arts Trust, an Art Consultancy and curator, functioned as the link between the fine art world and the Academy, in virtue of the Creative Block project amongst other initiatives.

Her role was to train and prepare the Academy apprentices in the mosaic medium, including the historical styles and traditions, up to a professional level. The academy’s learners came from very different educational backgrounds and we had to face many challenges. The results were wonderful, in terms of artworks production and in terms of human bonding and growth, among both the learners and the staff.

About London School of Mosaic

The London School of Mosaic is the first and only art school in the UK focusing on teaching mosaic up to higher education level. For London Craft Week, they are collaborating with designer Adam Nathaniel Furman, translating one of his colourful and intricate designs into mosaic during two workshop sessions. Participants of each workshop receive a short introduction to the process of making mosaics while also getting an insight into Adam’s practice. This is followed by making the mosaic specifically set up for London Craft Week, which involves cutting and laying tiles according to the design provided by Adam. At the end of the session, participants can expect to have a good understanding of how a design idea can be realised in mosaic. The London School of Mosaic is excited to work with Adam, having been instinctively drawn to the contrasting use of colour, pattern and shapes in his works. Mosaic is created following a specific ‘andamento’, which is the pattern emerging from the flow between tiles and gaps. As many of of Adam’s works reference ornamentation and symbolism, the school is curious to see how his ideas will transfer to the concept of andamento. Visitors to the school can expect a warm welcome to the community: a collaborative space that houses many other artists and creatives.
